Maintenance requirements vary by model and manufacturer - always read the manual. Generally, you will need to use a manufacturer-approved lithium-ion charger to keep the battery charged. Regular cleaning and daily inspections of terminals, cables and the casing can help you address problems early. Many modern models have fleet management systems, battery management systems (BMS) and other telematics support that can alert you when you need maintenance.

You will need a manufacturer-approved, dedicated smart charger and a BMS that facilitates communication between the battery and charger, preventing overcharging, overheating and other problems. You will also need a secure charging or docking station with a safe parking space, cable management system and kick plates or other safeguards to protect the wall boxes and charging unit.

To use the system, drive the forklift into the charging area and completely shut off the ignition before connecting the charger to the battery connector. Most chargers will detect the battery's state of charge (SoC) and begin charging. Once the battery is charged or your team needs to get back to work, turn off the power supply and unplug the charger from the battery. Reconnect the battery to the forklift power cable.
