History
Alta began in 1984 with a single location in Detroit. Through the support of our customers and the hard work of our team, Alta has grown to 80 plus locations throughout the Midwest, Northeast, Florida and Canada. As we’ve grown, our commitment to serving our customers has remained consistent, while our ability to meet their needs has increased.
1972
Yale Industrial Trucks Inc. was founded in 1972 by Jim McFadyen as a dedicated dealership for Yale forklifts in Ontario and Quebec, Canada. Jim McFadyen's vision was to provide top-quality material handling equipment to businesses in the region, quickly establishing the company as a trusted name in the industry. Through a combination of exceptional service and a commitment to customer satisfaction, Yale Industrial Trucks Inc. grew steadily, becoming a leading provider of forklifts and related services.
2022
On July 29, 2022, Yale Industrial Trucks Inc. reached a significant milestone in its history when it was acquired by Alta Material Handling and operated as YIT an Alta Company. This acquisition marked a new chapter for the company, as it became part of a larger, more resourceful organization. The integration with Alta Material Handling allowed YIT to expand its offerings and improve service capabilities, benefiting from Alta's extensive industry experience and operational expertise.
2024
On July 12, 2024, YIT an Alta Company is officially known as Alta Material Handling in Canada. This signifies the complete integration of the company into the Alta family, aligning its identity with Alta's well-established brand. The transition aims to enhance brand recognition and streamline operations, ensuring that customers continue to receive high-quality products and services under the unified Alta Material Handling banner.

Going Green
At Alta Material Handling, we are proud to be one of the largest producers of zero emissions electric lift trucks in the North American Market. However, we understand that electric lift trucks may not be the best solution for your situation.
To offset emissions from your day to day operations, Alta Material Handling has pledged to plant five trees through Tree Canada, on your company’s behalf, for every ICE truck purchased. Our goal is to provide cleaner air for our fellow Canadians of today and tomorrow.
Additionally, our partnership with Nuvera ensures that even after a lift truck is purchased, it continues to benefit the environment. With no emissions or off-gassing and no chemicals needed for battery washing, Nuvera improves the workplace and promotes long-term productivity and sustainability.
